Pop star Dua Lipa responded to accusations of miming during her performance at Glastonbury 2024. Some viewers thought her performance on Friday, June 28, seemed too well-done to be live. Lipa firmly stated, “I don’t mime.”
Lipa headlined the famous festival, followed by Coldplay and SZA. During her performance, Kevin Parker from Tame Impala surprised the audience by joining her in performing “The Less I Know, The Better.”
The show featured her popular songs like “Training Season,” “One Kiss,” “Illusion,” “Break My Heart,” “Levitating,” and “These Walls,” making it a night to remember.
During the BBC broadcast, technical issues made it seem like the singer was lip-syncing. People watching noticed her voice didn’t match her movements on their screens, making it seem like she wasn’t singing live.
When they switched from BBC on Sky to Freeview, the problem went away, which suggested that the issue was with the broadcast, not the performance.
“I might be wrong but it looks like Dua Lipa is miming on #Glastonbury just looks & sounds too polished to be live. And you can’t dance like that & remain pitch perfect. Kinda defeats the idea of the festival if she is miming #DuaLipa,” tweeted one user.
Another said, “Imagine paying all that money to go Glastonbury to stand there and watch Dua Lipa mime the song and not even sing it. How bad.”
Lipa responded to the accusations confidently, stating, “I don’t mime” when approached by a Mail Online reporter. Her set received a four-star rating from NME’s Liberty Dunworth, who described it as a “visual spectacle” and a “glittering celebration of pop in its highest form.”
Dunworth’s review emphasised the immersive experience of the performance, with meticulously choreographed routines and rapid outfit changes being the highlights.
Moreover, some fans saw the accusations against Lipa as proof of her singing ability. One supporter tweeted, “If you’re Dua Lipa you’ve got to be pretty happy with yourself to wake up and see this many people claiming you’ve mimed your set. Shows how strong her vocals were. Great performance, banger after banger.”
Another added, “No Dua Lipa is not miming. Majority of the main vocal parts are quite clearly live. She’s smashing it and everyone on stage look like they’re having the time of their lives. #Glastonbury.”
Despite the controversy, Lipa’s performance was a lifelong dream come true for the 28-year-old artist.
She started her set with “Training Season” from her latest album, “Radical Optimism,” and the crowd enthusiastically sang along to hits like “One Kiss” with Calvin Harris. Lipa told the audience, “I can’t believe this; I’ve dreamed about this my whole life.”
Emily Eavis, the festival organiser, praised Lipa, saying that the pop star was the perfect choice to headline Glastonbury. The weekend included outstanding performances from other headliners, such as Coldplay and SZA, and appearances from famous artists like Shania Twain and Cyndi Lauper.
The event also attracted celebrity attendees like Alexa Chung, Anya Taylor-Joy, Cara Delevingne, and Maya Jama with her boyfriend, Stormzy.
Glastonbury 2024 had a diverse lineup of artists despite technical issues affecting confident performers. The festival was full of different music styles, big names, and unique experiences.
The vibrant atmosphere wasn’t just about the music but also about the creative and sometimes playful outfits worn by the attendees. One person even dressed up as a kangaroo and hopped around.
The festival also had some problems to deal with. When the rock band Kasabian had a surprise performance, so many people rushed toward the stage that they had to limit access for safety reasons.
They also tried to keep the festival connected to its original simple style by inviting only a few celebrities. However, some unique places like the Soho House pop-up club had fancy food catered to famous people. For example, they served sea bream for £34.
I like Dua, she has some good material and obviously knows the dance moves. But let’s be real here, she does lip some of her songs depending on the situation. Why deny it?
