A well-known Brazilian actress has landed in hot water after revealing on live television that she gifted her daughter a sex toy for her 12th birthday — prompting calls for a police investigation.
Claudia Raia, 58, made the shocking confession while appearing on the Portuguese TV show Goucha.
The veteran soap star and singer, who has long been vocal about embracing sexuality and self-exploration, casually mentioned that she had given her daughter, Sophia Raia, a vibrator when she was just 12 years old.
During the interview, Raia was discussing how she maintained her sex drive even after menopause.
She proudly admitted to owning 17 vibrators and emphasized the importance of sex toys for women’s health.
“Toys help a lot,” she said, before making the eyebrow-raising admission.
“When she turned 12, I gave her a vibrator,” Raia said on air.
She then recalled telling her daughter: “Go investigate yourself, you’ll find out what you like.”
The comment ignited a firestorm on social media, with critics calling out her parenting choices as inappropriate and irresponsible.
Public Backlash and Police Report
Raia’s revelation sparked fury online, with many questioning why she would expose a child to such an adult item.
One outraged Instagram user slammed her for not “respecting the innocence of children,” while another called the move “ridiculous and unnecessary.”
On X (formerly Twitter), users expressed their disbelief.
“Claudia Raia is very clueless,” one person wrote, while another added: “In the past, mothers gave dolls.”
The backlash took a serious turn when Brazilian congresswoman Cristiano Caporezzo filed a police complaint against the actress, accusing her of violating Article 241-D of the Children and Adolescents Statute.
The law prohibits exposing minors to inappropriate content, and the case is now in the hands of the São Paulo Civil Police.
Raia Attempts to Clarify
As the outrage intensified, Raia attempted to walk back her comments, claiming her words had been misinterpreted.
In a series of Instagram stories, she insisted that she has always fostered open and age-appropriate discussions about sex with her children.
“I have always encouraged open dialogue with my children about all topics, including sex education, in a respectful and age-appropriate manner,” she said.
“As a mother, my priority has always been to create an environment of trust and information. However, I understand that each family has its own way of dealing with these issues, and I respect that.”
Despite her clarification, the controversy hasn’t died down.
Her daughter Sophia, now 22 and a mother herself, has remained silent on the matter.
Expert Weighs In
Sex therapist Tamara Zanotelli weighed in on the scandal, saying that while vibrators are increasingly being recognized for their health benefits — including some doctors prescribing them — giving one to a 12-year-old raises serious concerns.
“People are becoming more open to understanding the role of vibrators beyond pleasure,” Zanotelli explained.
“But when we’re talking about a mother giving her 12-year-old daughter a vibrator, that raises other issues.”
She also noted that while some preteens may begin to explore their own sexuality at a young age, providing a child with a sex toy is deeply troubling.
A History of Controversy
Raia is no stranger to controversy.
Just two years ago, at the age of 56, she made headlines for giving birth to her youngest child, Luca, defying societal expectations around motherhood and age.
She also has two older children — 27-year-old social media influencer Enzo, and Sophia, now 22.
Despite her attempts to clarify the situation, it remains to be seen whether Raia will face legal consequences for her remarks.
For now, the public remains divided — some defending her open approach to parenting, while others call for authorities to take action.
